10 years as Chancellor….10 months as PM

April 15, 2008 at 6:17 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m just watching the headlines on channel 4 and the opening line was ” 10 years as Chancellor, 10 months as Prime minister, Gordon Brown….” and then started to mention all the things going wrong at the moment, and with each statement, the camera became even closer to a close up of the prime ministers face. “it seems to have all gone mushy” John Snow asked.  What is mushy?

I sat and watched about ten headlines….none of them positive. It seems that Britain is in a state of negative news at the moment, and although bad news can be more interesting and make the public want to listen more, there’s still room for good news…it just seems that know one is reporting on it!!

At long last….

April 10, 2008 at 12:48 pm (Uncategorized)

….I decided to update my blog! Why no updates before this? Well as a student I have numerous hours a week spent wasting my time apparently, being lazy and generally procrastinating. Instead I feel that my time is all taken up, and I wonder to myslef what I’m actually doing. Well apart from having a part time job to buy my stale student bread that is.

However, jokes aside I feel like my time at University is slipping by without me really appreciating what I am doing and am not learning enough. I should be trying to learn more all the time while I have the chance…instead this Easter I have used my time travelling between Uni and home reading the Metro and the London Lite to fill my time. I know they don’t always have valuable information and are probably the least reliable sources of media….but I feel that they are my escape…I really don’t have to think when I read them. Also the recent news has been confusing lately, especially with the developments of the Shannon case, and so rather than confuse myself with the details….I find myself reading these papers. However I realise that I should challenge myself and be a proper journalism student!! …I should challenge myslef, but right now I’m worried about the deadlines in the coming weeks.

I’m also worried about the chat we had from the journalists that came to talk to us in our careers module. They said (very truly) that is is an extremely tough job to get into, and the employers are looking for obviously the best employee’s possible for the job. This leaves me wondering if you arn’t an expert at what you do, then do you have a chance?

The Big Blog

February 6, 2008 at 10:52 am (Uncategorized)

Hi I’m Kim, I’m in my second year of Journalism at Winchester, and come from a place called Ruislip in Middlesex. This means that before I came to Uni, I lived near London, which meant reading alot of The Metro. Contrary to some people’s opinions, I like The Metro. I had to get the train to school/sixth form every day and so why spend money on a broadsheet, when I can get the news from a free paper. The quality may not be good, but the reason it is a success is because it is convenient and easy to read.

CANCER?! I don’t think so.

Maybe my opinion will change…….
